1942. Joseph is eleven. And this June morning, he must go to school, a yellow star sown on his chest. He receives the support of a goods dealer. The mockery of a baker. Between kindness and contempt, Jo, his Jewish friends, their families, learn of life in an occupied Paris, on the Butte Montmartre, where they've taken shelter. At least that's what they think, until that morning on July 16th 1942, when their fragile happiness is toppled over.

This is a very fine movie. I give 4 out of 5. The movie is very well made, in every detail. You can feel the atmosphere of La Belle France in the 1940´s. The story is a kind of "re-enactment documentary" about the imprisonment of French Jews during the regime of the Vichy government. The idea is probably to agitate the viewer into a kind of black-and-white-thinking about who was good and who was bad, back then in the old days. But we all know that already, and it is not really that important. Why cry and sob about 70-year old crimes, when new crimes are being committed in our day and age? The French government is still a kind of Vichy government, collaborating with Khadaffi, and other tyrants in the Arab world, in order to stop the mass exodus of empoverished Arabs from northern Africa into Europe. And in Palestine, Iraq, and Afghanistan, children are also being torn away from their mothers every day. I think the movie was a bit over-pretentious - it had "to much cream and sugar on the chocolate bar" - and it would have won a lot of being less melodramatic. The horrible events of WW2 were not unique for their time, and we have to keep on fighting the good fight in our generation as well. If that was the message of the movie makers, I think I got it, and I will keep on fighting against modern French laws banning religious symbols in the schools and in the workplace. So, well done; a moving, touching and emotional movie about the French Holocaust. But I prefer Jews who fire back, as in the movie "Defiance".
