Back To Basics – Blackjack

Blackjack is often considered the perfect game for beginners – due to the easy-to-grasp rules and straightforward strategy involved. For a game that originated in the 18th century, Blackjack has certainly managed to remain on top and continues to be enjoyed by players of all levels today. These days, there are so many different ways to get your Blackjack fix, all thanks to the latest developments in technology, including online with Griffon Casino.

However, sometimes it’s good to take things back to basics. Read on as we talk you through the bare bones of Blackjack, and help you discover just why the game is so popular today!

The Cards

Blackjack is usually played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. In this game, the suits aren’t counted – the player’s main concern is the numbers on the card. All face cards are given an automatic value of 10, whilst the Ace can be read as either one or 11, depending on your hand.

When the game begins, each player is dealt two cards, both face up. The deal also receives two cards, however, one of their cards is placed face down, hidden from the rest of the table. This adds another element of chance to the game that keeps players coming back for me.

The Dealer’s Up-Card

As we’ve touched on above, only one of the dealer’s cards will be dealt face up. This is usually referred to as their “up-card”. This card is the main influence over what actions you’ll choose to take with your own hand. After all, the aim of the game is to beat the dealer by achieving a hand that totals 21, or by the dealer going bust.

Miss the Myths

Much like any game of chance, there are myths surrounding Blackjack, that we encourage you to ignore. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular ones:

1. “Always assume the dealer’s face-down card equals 10”

This myth is really just that. Look at it this way: if there are only 16 cards with a value of 10 within a standard 52 card deck, being dealt a 10 is only likely to happen every 3.25 cards. Therefore, the idea that the dealer can hold a 10 more frequently, is extremely unlikely.

2. “It’s best to imitate the dealer’s moves”

When you’re new to Blackjack, it’s understandable that you might look to the dealer’s decisions to influence your own. But this is unlikely to help you since the dealer will naturally have a slight advantage, as they will usually be second to make a move. And, if you go bust on your turn, the dealer automatically wins.

3. “There’s a way to always win”

The most important thing to remember when playing Blackjack is that it is a game of chance. This means that there’s nothing you can do to truly influence the outcome of the game. A lot of players will disagree and believe that their style of gameplay makes an impact but, unfortunately, this just isn’t true!
