Tech and entertainment go hand in hand in the modern world. This is not only in terms of using the latest technology to create things to entertain people with but also taking advantage of the latest tech to consume content. A great example of this idea in action is filmmaking. Not only are films now created using the latest modern tech, but we also like to use online streaming platforms and cutting-edge mobile devices to view them.
While the filmmaking sector includes a diverse range of individual directors, producers and writers who break into it without any precedent, it can also have the children of those already involved follow suit. Although you might not realize this, it happens regularly and children of filmmakers often choose to follow in their parents’ footsteps.
For example, it would not surprise you at all to see the highly talented Nicholas Otto-Bernstein follow his famous mother, Katherina Otto-Bernstein, into this industry. With his love of videos, media and films, plus the experience he will have in this world already, he is perfectly positioned to make this transition.
If he did, Otto-Bernstein would not be alone. But what other famous filmmakers have followed their parents into making movies?
Sofia Coppola
One of the greatest filmmakers whose parents also made movies is Sofia Coppola. Daughter of iconic director Francis Ford Coppola, she had no hesitation following her father into this industry when the time was right. Since then, she has proved to be a superb filmmaker and demonstrated that she has what it takes to leave her own legacy in this sector.
The Oscar-winning ‘Lost in Translation’ with Bill Murray is perhaps her best-known work, but movies such as ‘The Bling Ring’ and ‘Somewhere’ also show just what an eye she has for a shot. With more to come from her in the future, movie lovers can only look forward to what she brings to the table next.
Brandon Cronenberg
With a dad like David Cronenberg, moving into making films as his son is almost a given! This is certainly true for Brandon Cronenberg, who was not slow to get behind the camera himself when ready.
The movie ‘Antiviral’ which released in 2012 was every bit as shocking as his father’s most famous works and showed he too had a knack for catching moviegoers’ attention. 2020’s ‘Possessor’ further showed what this talented filmmaker can do and that he is not afraid to make movies which challenge people’s perceptions of life. As with Sofia Coppola, it will be interesting to see what his next film is about and what message it sends to the world.
John Hyams
Peter Hyams made his name as an action-movie maker and is the man behind hits such as ‘Timecop’ and ‘Sudden Death’. His son John is obviously a chip off the old block and has also followed his father into the movie world. In an interesting twist, John Hyams also focuses on action films which feature stars such as Jean Claude Van-Damme – who was in some of his fathers’ films too!
There is no doubt that John Hyams’ films differ from his father’s though and bring an almost pop-art quality to the events we see on screen. Mixing high-octane thrills with expertly crafted atmosphere, his best-known movie so far is perhaps ‘Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning’.
Asia Argento
One of Europe’s biggest horror directors of all time is Dario Argento. Responsible for classics such as ‘Suspiria’ and ‘Inferno’, his name still looms large for this genre of films. When you think that he cast his daughter Asia in his movie ‘Trauma’, then it is no surprise to see her also end up making films too.
Since moving into filmmaking in her own right, alongside being a top actress, Asia Argento has shown that she not only has inherited her father’s flair for striking visuals but also has her own directing style. ‘Scarlet Diva’ in 2000 was perhaps the film that got her noticed on the world stage and other efforts subsequently, such as ‘Misunderstood’, have only enhanced her reputation.
Children of filmmakers often follow in their footsteps
Whether you enjoy watching movies on the best Android phones in 2022 or still prefer to head to the cinema, relaxing with a good film is awesome. As the above shows, there are some great examples of children who have followed their parents in making films. When you also take a look at multiple other examples we have not listed, such as Rob Reiner, then it becomes clearer how regularly this happens. As time moves on, it is likely that we will only continue to see more iconic moviemakers come through to continue their parents’ legacy in the industry.
